What to Do Right Now
A water heater problem is frustrating, but a few quick steps can keep things safe until help arrives.
If you see water spreading from the unit, close the cold-water shutoff valve to the water heater if you can reach it safely. This is usually a lever or wheel on the pipe going into the top of the tank. Keep away from standing water near electrical outlets, and never touch a wet electric water heater or its wiring.
For a gas unit, if you smell gas, leave the area and contact your gas utility or emergency services first — then call a plumber once it is safe. Do not try to relight a pilot light repeatedly if it keeps going out; that pattern points to a fault that needs professional attention.
Do not remove access panels or attempt internal repairs yourself. Water heaters combine water, pressure, and heat — and often gas or high-voltage electricity. A wrong move can cause burns, flooding, or worse.
